This weekend over 200 Volunteers  and 28 Non-Profit Organizations are expected to gather on Microsoft’s campus in Redmond, Washington for the annual Seattle Givecamp, a weekend-long “hackathon” style event where software developers, website wonks, project managers and designers donate their time to design and build solutions for non-profit organizations in need. From health and wildlife outreach programs to community food coalitions, participating non-profits submit technology projects that require assistance they don’t have funding or expertise to carry out. Volunteers will gather on Friday to learn about each Organizations’s Project, form teams, and spend the rest of the weekend (often working through the night) hacking together solutions.

On Saturday morning I will be returning for a 3rd year to lead a workshop for participating organizations and volunteers on how to better leverage WordPress on their projects during the weekend and beyond. Many of the participating organizations are either already using WordPress, or have identified their project as requiring a WordPress component. In my session I will cover a variety of WordPress topics ranging from how to start using WordPress for the first time, to using some it’s more advanced APIs, to simple every day tips and tricks. The session will be Saturday morning at 10:30am and is open to the general public.

This weekend 10up will be bringing some sunshine (and ten 10uppers!) to the Northwest for the 5th annual WordCamp Seattle. Seattle is a two day WordCamp this year with a jam packed Saturday featuring speakers, panels, lightning talks and even workshops. Sunday is a special contributor day with a number of core contributors leading groups who will be contributing back to the WordPress project. If you’re in the Northwest and haven’t already picked up your ticket, don’t miss this massive, 700-attendee WordCamp!

Kicking off the day on Saturday, Kailey Lampert and Adam Silverstein will each be delivering a presentation as a part of the developer lightning talks. Their sessions will focus on the hidden treasures of WordPress core and working with WordPress revisions in Backbone. Kailey will be pulling a double feature on Saturday, also being a part of the How to Become a Better WordPress Developer panel with Kronda Adair, Jeremy Felt, Zack Tollman and Morten Rand-Hendriksen.

Next, Paul Clark will be running an excellent session on Performance, Scale and WordPress, using real world examples from 10up’s experience with sites like Ted.com and hosting platforms like WordPress.com VIP. For anyone considering WordPress and it’s application in an enterprise context, don’t miss Paul’s presentation!

At the same time as Paul, Taylor Dewey will be running a workshop on SASS, walking through real life examples and breaking down some of the complexities of the workflow. If you’re thinking about getting into SASS, or have started and need a good tutorial, make sure you check out Taylor’s workshop. Taylor is also pulling a double feature, and will be giving a lightning talk on Responsive Web Design Workflows.

In addition to the four 10uppers presenting this weekend Andrew Mowe, Zach Brown, Luke Woodward, Cole Geissinger, Drew Jaynes and myself will all be on-site organizing, volunteering and contributing to the event. We’d love to see you there!

10up Hosts Scott Berkun in Portland

Hey there PDX! As you may know, 10up has a brick & mortar office in Portland. So when our friend Scott Berkun reached out to us saying he’d be in Portland next weekend, we thought Why not host a fun, unique opportunity to hear from Scott at the 10up office?

It’s our pleasure to announce we’ll be hosting Scott for a small, intimate chat about his recent book The Year Without Pants and his time running a distributed team working on WordPress.com. If you’re a designer, engineer, project manager or other web savvy Portlander interested in WordPress and/or distributed work, we’d love for you to join us!

Grant Landram brings his web strategy passion to 10up

My name is Grant and I’m thrilled to be joining the 10up family as a Senior Web Strategist. Although I don’t feel very Senior, I do feel extremely excited to bring my 5+ years of experience in entrepreneurship, web strategy, design and development to team 10up.

As a young student in business school I had wandering passions for business, economics and mathematics, all of whose depressingly boring early career paths led me to find the world of startups and the Internet. In my pursuit for more engaging and accessible outlets for my creative energy, I started experimenting with web design, PHP, and eventually WordPress. After those actions, I was hooked (see also: bad puns).

As I learned more about the economics of the internet, I quickly began building a business around web strategy. Being self-employed since 2009, I accrued an array of experiences including SEO and link building, consulting for tech startups, speaking about organizational economics and business strategy, managing large projects for Fortune 500 clients, even a brief 11-month affair with my own SaaS startup. In the end WordPress won my heart, and for the past few years I’ve built websites and web applications with WordPress, spoken at WordCamps, and organized meet-ups and WordCamps in the beautiful, amazing, it-doesn’t-rain-as-much-as-you-might-think city of Seattle, Washington.
